Zain Bahrain reports impressive 20% net profit growth for full-year 2018,
to reach BD 5.174 million

Manama – 17 February 2019: Zain Bahrain, a leading telecommunications provider in the Kingdom, announces its financial results for the year ended 31 December 2018, recording a net profit of BD 5.174 million (US$13.688 million), with 20% year-on-year (YoY) compared to a net profit of BD4.306million (US$11.392 million) for the same period of 2017. Furthermore, operating profit for the year increased 12% YoY to BD 5.112 million (US$13.524 million), from BD4.545million (US$12.024 million) last year. These impressive results are driven by the company's improved operational performance and profitable data monetization activities focusing on both the Enterprise (B2B) and individual customer.

For the fourth quarter of 2018 (Q4), Zain Bahrain recorded a net profit of BD 1.489 million (US$3.939 million), down 1% YoY from BD 1.507 (US$ 3.987 million). Operating profit for Q4 2018 amounted to BD1.457 million (US$3.854 million), down 6% YoY from BD 1.551 million (US$ 4.103 million) last year.

For the 2018 full-year, overall revenue was down 10% YoY to BD 66.198 million (US$175.127 million) in 2018, from BD73.696 million (US$194.963 million) achieved in 2017. Also, Q4 2018 revenue decreased 9% when compared to the same quarter in 2017, amounting to BD 17.505 million (US$46.310 million) from BD 19.169 million (US$ 50.712 million).

Zain Bahrain earnings per share increased 17% YoY in 2018 to 14 fils from 12 fils. For Q4 2018, earnings per share remained on par with 2017 at 4 fils.

Zain Bahrain's total equity at the end of the year stood at BD 70.213 million (US$185.749 million), up 5% YoY from BD 67.110 million (US$177.540 million) in 2017. The company's assets amounted to BD 94.803 million (US$250.802 million), down 7% YoY from BD 101.922 (US$ 269.635 million) in 2017.

Commenting on the results, Zain Bahrain Chairman, His Excellency Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa said, "Zain Bahrain recorded a solid performance in 2018, cementing its position as a leading operator in the Kingdom. Key achievements at Zain Bahrain in 2018

  • - Achieved a 20% expansion of its network, improving the indoor and outdoor connectivity experience for users. This achievement is a continuation of the expansion project started in 2017.
  • - Recognized as the network with the highest fixed wireless broadband download speeds in the Kingdom for two consecutive quarters by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA). According to the latest TRA Quarterly Fixed Broadband Quality of Service Report, Zain Bahrain achieved the highest results for HTTP download speeds for fixed wireless broadband residential packages, while also outperforming its previous results in several key performance indicators.
  • - Launched zBot, an all-new interactive digital channel for smart customer service, making it the first telecom operator to launch this innovative solution in the Kingdom. The service launch is in line with Zain's strategy to deliver exceptional customer experience, investing in robotics technology within the customer care area to provide customers with a reliable and fast Live Chat experience.
  • - Transformed its mobile app from being service-oriented to be a complete end-to-end eShop, offering customers the opportunity to buy services online anywhere, anytime.
  • - Introduced e-signature for customers, enabling them to sign documents digitally through all Zain retail and indirect sales channels. This promoted efficiency while reducing paper consumption, in line with Zain's green environment initiatives.
  • - Introduced a new electronic SIM (eSIM), which is compatible with the latest iPhones from Apple, including the iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR running the 12.1 iOS and higher.
  • - Unveiled the Middle East – Europe Terrestrial System (MEETS), an international cable system that provides state-of-the-art high bandwidth regional connectivity solutions.
  • - Grew its portfolio of corporate clients, to whom the company provides high-speed and reliable connectivity solutions. Amongst its newest customers added during the year are Nass & Sons, Swiss-Bel Residences Juffair, and Chisholm Enterprises WLL.
  • - Offered existing and new customers an exciting range of product promotions under the number "15", in celebration of Zain Bahrain's 15th anniversary. Additionally, Zain Bahrain partnered with The Entertainer, a leading provider of loyalty and reward solutions, to offer every new customer who subscribed to a SIM-only postpaid plan during the promotional period access to two-for-one deals at popular venues across the region.
  • - Demonstrated its commitment to the community by relaunching its youth empower program, under the new name 'Zain Youth'. The company also entered a partnership with Bahrain Society for Training and Human Resource Development (BSTD) to launch a women's leadership skills empowerment program, and additionally offered a masterclass workshop for employees focusing on Digital Transformation.
